Sample Room Leader
The Sample Room Leader manages the full footwear sampling and industrialization process—from design brief to approved production-ready sample. The role ensures technical accuracy, manufacturability, costing readiness, and smooth handover into mass production, while leading a small sample room team.
Key Responsibilities
Sample Development & Technical Execution
Receive and review tech packs, design briefs, private label requirements, and customer specifications.
Lead the creation of prototypes, fit samples, confirmation samples, and sales samples.
Validate patterns, lasts, molds, upper construction, material choices, and outsole bonding methods.
BOM, Costing & Documentation
Create and validate Bill of Materials (BOM) for each new style to support costing, purchasing, and production accuracy.
Ensure material consumption, trims, waste allowances, and construction notes are clearly documented.
Maintain complete development files, revision history, measurement reports, and approval records.
Sample Room Planning & Team Leadership
Plan, prioritize, and schedule sampling activities according to deadlines and business priorities.
Supervise and develop a team of technicians, operators, and admin staff (currently 6 people).
Build technical capability through training, coaching, and continuous improvement.
Material & ERP Coordination
Request, track, and verify all sample materials, components, and trims.
Ensure all new materials, components, and models are correctly coded, uploaded, and approved in ERP—owning data accuracy (execution handled by team member).
Maintain an organized material archive and approved color/finish standards.
Industrialization & Handover to Production
Conduct structured pilot runs to validate manufacturability, cycle time, skill requirements, tooling, and quality risks.
Develop preliminary line layouts, workflow sequences, and machine/skill allocation for new models.
Deliver signed control samples to Production, QC, Warehouse, and relevant stakeholders.
Document detailed SOPs—including machines, tooling, adhesives, stitch specs, temperatures, pressures, timings, and assembly steps—based on the approved control sample.
Lead formal handover meetings to align Production, QC, Planning, and Supply Chain before mass production.
Quality, Compliance & Communication
Inspect all samples against tech pack, last confirmation, comfort, function, durability, and aesthetic standards.
Communicate timelines, risks, clarifications, and technical changes to Design, Sales, Purchasing, and Production.
Ensure sample shipments are properly labeled, packed, and documented for customer submission.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
Bachelor’s degree or technical diploma in Textile Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Fashion Technology
(Strong hands-on factory experience may substitute formal education.)
Professional Experience
5–10 years experience in sample development, product development, or technical manufacturing within a factory environment
Experience leading or coordinating a sample room, development team, or technical group
Proven experience taking products from prototype/sample stage through to production readiness
Experience working with private label, OEM, or brand-driven specifications
Exposure to pilot runs, process validation, or production trials (footwear experience not required)
Technical Competencies
Strong understanding of:
Product construction principles (multi-component products)
Textile and synthetic materials, trims, and components
Sewing/stitching operations and quality control
Process flow, sequencing, and workstation setup
Ability to create and validate:
Bills of Materials (BOMs)
Material consumption estimates and waste allowances
Technical documentation and work instructions
Practical knowledge of:
Line layout concepts for new products
Cycle time estimation and manpower planning
Identification of manufacturing risks and defect prevention
Systems & Tools
Experience working with ERP systems for:
Material and model setup
BOM structure and data validation
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel
Experience with PLM or sample tracking systems is a plus
Leadership & Soft Skills
Hands-on leadership approach with technicians and operators
Strong planning, prioritization, and follow-up discipline
Clear communicator across Design, Production, QC, Purchasing, and Planning
Problem-solving mindset with strong ownership
Comfortable working under pressure and tight development timelines
Languages
